Our Story
A Legacy in Dillon, Montana
Bryan and Marcia Mussard have owned and operated Reminisce Angus Ranch since 1984 with a clear vision for regenerating and stewarding the land, raising exceptional animals, and making profit for supporting their family and community. With nearly 50 years in ranching, Bryan has seen every part of the cattle business and has a keen eye for his cattle and changes in their health.
In 2019 the Mussard’s purchased several hundred acres near Dillon to grow their operation. The land had been managed with heavy chemical fertilizer for years to produce native grass hay. The soil biology and ecosystem were very depleted and dependent on chemical fertilizer to produce feed. The sterile soil was producing a low quality grass and the impact was clear in the degraded health of his cattle.
Bryan made a difficult and life-changing choice: they stopped using chemical fertilizers to give the soil a chance to heal. The recovery was not easy; It was a period of big losses, but they knew they had to stop focusing on "feeding the plant" with chemistry and start focusing on "feeding the soil" with biology.
THE TURNING POINT
In 2022, during the third year of soil recovery, Bryan discovered EnSoil Algae™. He began applying it with the goal of growing high-volume, high-quality hay without fertilizer. From there, the program expanded. Bryan noticed his cattle selecting forage grown with algae first, leading the Mussards to increase its use. Today, all of Bryan's pastures and hay acres — and the acres of every producer who grows feed for him — are treated with EnSoil Algae™.
The payoff has been measurable…
Feed is grown at a fraction of the traditional input cost
Soil life has "exploded," creating better structure and water infiltration
Nutrients (especially vitamins and minerals) are moving naturally into the forage
Mineral consumption has dropped dramatically
Conception rates have improved multiple years in a row
Calf mortality has declined
Health interventions have dropped significantly
Recent testing has pinpointed the reason for the improved fertility: Vitamins A, E, and D — all essential for reproduction, immunity, and early calf vigor. Across multiple valleys and multiple operations, those vitamin levels have doubled in algae-treated forage.
The story is straightforward: If management practices and inputs focus on building life in the soil, everything else falls into place — and it's more profitable.
THE CREATION BEHIND MONTANA NATURAL SOIL SOLUTIONS
After seeing the transformation at his own ranch, Bryan realized that his struggle wasn't unique. Ranchers across the West are being handcuffed by rising input costs and declining forage quality.
Montana Natural Soil Solutions was founded to educate growers who want to stop treating symptoms with expensive minerals and start fixing the root cause. MNSS is a supplier of solutions that build and support life in the soil to improve the health of animals and the humans that depend on them.
"Try something different. Start at the root cause. Focus on your soil health and everything will follow. You spend on the soil, and the soil feeds your cows, rather than spending on other inputs. Biology isn't another add-on—it deletes other inputs."
— Bryan Mussard
FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
At the end of the day, this work is about the future we leave behind. We aren’t just ranching for ourselves; we are stewarding this land for our kids and their kids. By rebuilding the biology in our soil today, we are ensuring a healthier environment and a more resilient legacy for the next generation to inherit.
